Hutch Size Calculator

The number is the published minimum for two average rabbits, not a size generated from breed body length. Body lengths are not in the data file.

Units

Published minimum

3 m × 2 m × 1 m

RWAF’s own imperial figures: 9 ft 10 in × 6 ft 7 in × 3 ft 3 in. Floor area 6 m². One block, available all the time. An upper floor does not count.

Sleeping quarters, shelter only: 1.8 m × 0.6 m × 0.6 m (6 ft × 2 ft × 2 ft). A hutch this size is not a home.

Enclosure you have or plan to buy

Leave these blank to see only the published minimum. In feet, 6 ft 6 in is 6.5.

Standards are minimums based on RWAF and RSPCA guidance. Bigger is always better. This page does not turn the floor into a hop count, because neither source publishes a hop length.

RWAF says these recommendations apply indoors and outdoors, and that free-range time is extra space that should be supervised. A housing guide with build plans is not published yet. Care guides. Figures reviewed 2026-10-21.

    Questions

How big should a rabbit enclosure be?
RWAF and the RSPCA both publish a minimum of 3 m × 2 m × 1 m high for two average or medium rabbits. RWAF also says one rabbit kept alone still needs that same footprint. The space has to be available all the time, in one block, and an upper floor does not count.
    Is a 6 ft × 2 ft × 2 ft hutch enough?
That is the RWAF minimum for the sleeping quarters only. RWAF says a hutch should never be the sole or main accommodation.
Does an 8 ft × 8 ft pen pass?
No. RWAF says a 3 m length matters. An 8 ft × 8 ft pen does not have a 3 m side, even when the floor area looks close.
What about giant breeds or more than two rabbits?
RWAF says giant breeds need more space and does not publish the larger number. The RSPCA says more rabbits need a larger home and does not publish a number for three or four. This tool does not multiply the minimum by a guess.
